How a career that stopped fitting gets described to strangers
Nobody goes to Reddit looking for a life coach. They go to ask whether one is worth it, which is a different question and usually the last one somebody asks before they hire anybody. The post runs five hundred words and almost none of it is about coaching: a job that pays well and stopped meaning anything, a manager who left, a degree that turned out to be a detour, a birthday with a zero on the end coming up. Then one line at the bottom asking whether anybody has actually done this and whether it changed anything. That last line is the ask, and it lands in a room whose first instinct is to say the word means nothing and the field is unregulated.
Most of what this read kept, twenty-two threads in all, came from people who had already said the word out loud: does this actually do anything, what does a block of sessions run, and can anybody name somebody who isn’t selling a course on the side. The rest hadn’t asked anybody for a name and were measuring a stack of library books, a free worksheet, and a friend who is good at listening against paying a stranger by the hour. Which one you open changes what the reply has to carry. The person hunting a name wants a figure and the shape of a first month; the person describing how it feels needs to hear that it has a shape at all.
What fills the space around them is the trade addressing itself: credential threads, first-client questions, somebody announcing a niche they settled on last week, and the permanent argument over whether this counts as a profession at all. Weighed at three-to-one, whoever got as far as opening a wallet is buried underneath every bit of it, and digging them out costs a weeknight that billed nobody.
Where to find coaching clients on Reddit
The asks live in three kinds of room, and coaches are only in one of them. The big general advice rooms come first, because somebody describing a career they have stopped believing in writes there before they write anywhere specialized, and what they get back is strangers guessing. Rooms for a single occupation are the sharper seam, the nurses, the developers, the teachers, and the accountants, where somebody five years in says out loud that they want out and everybody reading already knows exactly what they would be leaving. Rooms for people laid off in the same week are the third and the quickest, since everyone in one has a severance figure and a date by which a decision has to exist. Rooms full of coaches hold no clients at all, only credential arguments and first-client questions. Three other trades stand in those same threads. Somebody who has just settled on changing fields needs a photograph taken before the first interview. The ones retraining rather than switching employers are working through a portfolio and the hunt for a first junior role. And an owner who has concluded that the way out is to hand the whole thing over is quietly asking what the business would fetch and who would buy it.
The reply that earns a first call says what the first month is
The room’s reflex answer to any coaching question is that the word means nothing and anybody can print a certificate, and the room is not entirely wrong, which is exactly why the reply that works is the one that makes the abstraction countable. Say what the first month is made of: how many sessions, how long each runs, what happens in the weeks between them, what the person is asked to bring, and what gets written down at the end of it. Give a figure for a block rather than an hourly rate, because an hourly rate invites somebody to buy one hour, get a pleasant conversation, and conclude the whole thing is air. Then say plainly who should not hire you. Somebody describing what is obviously grief needs a therapist and will be poorly served by goal-setting, and somebody who needs a resume rewritten and a salary band to aim at needs one good afternoon, not twelve weeks. Turning two people away in public is the only thing in that thread that reads like somebody who is not selling, and it is why your name is the one typed the next three times the question comes around.
What finding clients on Reddit actually costs you
Nobody with a waiting list needed to find this page. You’re here because every hour spent looking for the next client is an hour that wasn’t a session, or an hour you would buy back without thinking twice. Three replies before the first call take ten minutes, and ten minutes was never what stood in the way. Take the busiest general advice room and one room for an occupation you have already coached somebody out of, work through whatever is new in both, and quit at ten minutes. A thread worth opening has a decision sitting in it, a severance figure, an offer with a deadline on it, a lease ending, and a thread asking whether other people feel this way does not. Twenty-two of the 80 threads pulled out of those rooms on the latest read came from people weighing paying for help against reading more about it. Two rooms every morning will turn up more than eight rooms joined on a Sunday and muted by Wednesday.

Seed the thread with the first month, a figure for a block, and who shouldn’t hire you
Start with what the first month is made of, because coach is a word that means nothing until somebody counts the sessions and says what happens in the weeks between them. Price a block instead of an hour, since an hour invites somebody to buy one and decide the whole thing was a chat. Then name the two people who belong somewhere else, the one who needs a therapist and the one who needs an afternoon with their resume. Won’t I get banned for self-promotion?
You would, and quicker here than in most places, because a room that already doubts the profession is fast to report a pitch. Not the ones named after coaching, which hold practitioners arguing about credentials. General advice rooms carry the most volume and the widest mix, so a plain answer travels furthest there. Single-occupation rooms convert better, because the person leaving knows what they are leaving and so does everybody reading over their shoulder. Is Reddit worth the time for finding coaching clients?
Ten minutes a day, yes, above all because a plain answer in a doubtful room carries further here than it would anywhere else. An hour of scrolling, no, and that half tends to go unmentioned. Of the 80 threads in the latest read, twenty-two were people weighing whether to pay for help rather than read about it. That is three replies’ worth and nothing behind them.
