A homeowner planning a kitchen doesn’t go looking for a kitchen and bath designer. They go looking for a ruling: whether the island fits if the fridge moves, whether the sink can go under the window without rerouting everything below it, what the whole thing runs before anybody says the word cabinetry. Four led with a plan already coming apart: renderings promised two weeks ago and still not sent, a crew wanting to demo before a single measurement is final, and three quotes that between them describe three different kitchens. One hadn’t paid anybody yet and was still dragging walls around inside a free planning tool, wondering out loud whether a drawn layout is a real line item or something a showroom adds on. Which of those you opened decides what the reply has to do. Somebody hunting for a name wants to hear what a set of drawings includes and what it costs by itself. Somebody with a plan falling apart wants one person to say which wall is the problem.

The rest of the batch is the house being the house: a tile everybody has an opinion about, a permit story, an appliance deal worth driving for, and designers showing each other renderings. Weighed at two-to-one, a homeowner about to sign with a builder and a homeowner idly moving a sink toward the window use the same handful of words, so the nineteen worth answering only show themselves once all 50 are open.

The rooms worth ten minutes are organized around the house rather than around the trade. Home improvement and remodeling rooms lead, because that is where a homeowner posts the room as it stands and asks what can be done with it, and half of those posts are layout questions wearing a budget question’s clothes. Town rooms are the sleeper, since a remodel has to be walked through in person and an ask there brings five replies instead of five hundred. Rooms full of designers hold no clients at all, only software arguments and finish samples. The reply that wins the drawings puts the number on the layout, not on the finish

A homeowner posting their floor plan has two questions they haven’t typed, and a gallery of finished kitchens answers neither one. The first is whether the room they have can do the thing they want at all, because every remodeling video they have watched was filmed in a house with two more feet of wall than theirs. The second is what the design work costs on its own, separate from the cabinets, since every number anybody has given them so far came bundled with a sales quote. Answer both in the thread. Say which wall has to move and which one never will, give what a drawn set for a room that size usually runs, and say plainly when the layout they already sketched is fine. Telling a stranger their plan works looks like talking yourself out of a job. It is the opposite, because the homeowner now knows exactly one person who looked at their room instead of their budget.
