A family that wants pictures doesn’t go looking for a photographer. They ask the room where they also ask about dentists and roof repairs, in four lines. On the latest pass, twenty-one of the twenty-two lit threads came from parents asking the room for a name, with the reason attached in half a line: everybody in one place while the grandparents are over, a toddler nobody can get to sit still, pictures for the wall that don’t look like a catalogue. One hadn’t got as far as paying anybody and was weighing a tripod, a timer, and a willing neighbor against an hour with somebody who does this properly. Which one you’re answering decides everything about the reply. A parent who wants a name needs to hear what comes back at the end and roughly what it runs to. Somebody still deciding needs the straight version, the case for the tripod included, since that is the answer they remember when the tripod fails them.

Everything around them is the neighborhood being the neighborhood: trash pickup, a dog loose in the park, school pickup parking, and photographers showing each other their own work. Weighed at one-to-one, an ask for a photographer and an ask for a plumber are written in the same words by the same people, so the twenty-two worth answering only show themselves once all 50 have been opened.

Three kinds of room, and only two of them ever book anybody.
